Join a vibrant interdisciplinary community of scholars, practitioners and funders eager for research and insights that can inform their work on social challenges.

frank (scholar) is a novel academic conference that brings together scholars producing theoretically driven or empirical social scientific research that can be used to create lasting social change. Scholars interested in behavioral, institutional, and cultural change will present their work to academic peers as well as practitioners. Woven into the fabric of the annual frank gathering, frank scholar 2018 provides a unique opportunity to share research with academic colleagues as well as influential practitioners and foundations dedicated to creating positive social change.

A cash prize of $500 will be given to the top paper. The award is sponsored by The Joy McCann Foundation.

Meet our frank2018 scholar chairs:

  • Caty Borum Chattoo
    CMSI at American University

    Caty Borum Chattoo is Director of the Center for Media & Social Impact (CMSI), an innovation lab and research center at American University that creates, showcases and studies media designed for social change; and Executive in Residence at the American University School of Communication in Washington, D.C. She is an award-winning communication strategist, documentary film/TV producer and communication researcher working at the intersection of social change, and documentary and entertainment storytelling.

    Borum Chattoo’s social justice documentaries have aired internationally and nationally on Netflix, the Sundance Channel, Pivot, NDTV (India), PBS World, Link TV, KCET, DirectTV and theatrically. She has produced two documentary feature films (Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price and The After Party), a TV documentary and transmedia series (Stand Up Planet, starring Hasan Minhaj from The Daily Show), a multi-part documentary TV series focused on global poverty (ViewChange), a seven-part environmental justice documentary TV series (Sierra Club Chronicles), and PSA campaigns designed for social change on issues ranging from global poverty to climate change to HIV. She is currently in production for Mixed, a forthcoming documentary about bi-racial lives 50 years after the landmark Supreme Court case, Loving v. Virginia (1967), which ended state laws banning interracial marriage in the United States.

    In 2017, she launched The Laughter Effect, a research and creative initiative that studies and creates comedy at the intersection of social justice and activism, and she is a frequent speaker on the topic. Her book about the role of comedy in social justice, with co-author Lauren Feldman, will be published in 2019 by University of California Press (Communication for Social Justice Activism Series); the book is titled A Comedian and An Activist Walk Into a Bar: The [Serious] Role of Comedy in Social Justice.

    Peer-reviewed research is featured and forthcoming in top journals in communication and the humanities, including Journal of Communication, Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly and Oxford Bibliographies in Communication. She has been a featured presenter, speaker and workshop leader on the intersection of nonfiction storytelling and social justice at leading academic conferences (International Communication Association, National Communication Association), professional social-change conferences (Skoll World Forum, TEDx, Frank Conference for Social Change), international film festivals and convenings (Tribeca Film Festival, AFI DOCS, DOC NYC, European Documentary Network, Doc Impact Academy Netherlands) and other professional gatherings. She serves on the board of directors for Working Films, a non-profit organization working at the intersection of documentary storytelling and community engagement, and Kartemquin Films, a leading social-justice film production company.

    Previously, she was senior vice president in the social marketing (social/behavior change) practice group at FleishmanHillard International Communications in Washington, D.C., where she served on the senior leadership team that won the communication industry’s highest honor, the Silver Anvil for Public Service. In Los Angeles, she was a longtime collaborator with legendary TV producer and philanthropist/activist Norman Lear as a founding director of Declare Yourself and special projects director & senior producer at the USC Norman Lear Center, a research and public policy center that examines the social impact of entertainment on society. She also served as the program officer in the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Entertainment Media & Public Health program, where she managed research-based HIV-awareness partnership programs, TV specials and PSA campaigns with MTV and BET; project director at the Center for Media Education; and fellow in civic journalism at The Philadelphia Inquirer.

    Borum Chattoo holds an M.A. in Communication from the University of Pennsylvania (The Annenberg School for Communication), and a B.A. in Communication Studies (summa cum laude, In Honors, Phi Beta Kappa, Top Scholar award) from Virginia Tech. She has completed coursework toward the MFA in Film Production from the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television in Los Angeles.

  • Julia Daisy Fraustino
    West Virginia University

    Julia Daisy Fraustino, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of strategic communications at West Virginia University in the Reed College of Media. She is founding co-director of the Public Interest Communication (PIC) Research Lab in the WVU Media Innovation Center and a research affiliate at the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START), a DHS Center based at the University of Maryland.

    Fraustino specializes in risk, emergency, crisis, and disaster communication science. Her research appears in journals such as Communication Research, Journal of Applied Communication Research, Public Relations Review, Journal of Public Relations Research, Journal of Promotion Management, International Journal of Strategic Communication, and Computers in Human Behavior, among others. Among other accolades, she has earned top research paper awards from AEJMC, ICA, and NCA; was the 2017 Reed College of Media Faculty Research Award recipient; and was a 2016 frank Prize in Public Interest Communication awardee.

  • John D. Trybus
    Georgetown University

    John D. Trybus is a strategist and storyteller on a mission to help social impact organizations embrace the blur—between sectors, functions, departments and human strengths—for good.

    He leads and manages Georgetown University’s Center for Social Impact Communication, a renowned research and action center working to ignite the power of responsible marketers, communicators, fundraisers, and journalists to combine their strengths within an organization in order to drive societal change. In collaboration with the Center’s amazing team, John is charged with driving its operations, strategy, partnerships, research and curriculum.

    A purposeful integrator himself, John’s career journey has spanned sectors in pursuit of making impact.

    A life-changing encounter with world-famous chimpanzee expert and United Nations Messenger of Peace Dr. Jane Goodall, led him to become her personal advisor at the Jane Goodall Institute. He traveled nonstop with the environmental rockstar on her perpetual 300-day-per-year advocacy tour that took them around the globe working to inspire people to conserve the natural world we all share by realizing that every individual makes a difference. Whiskey–with a spot of water from the tap, per Jane’s request—was the fuel that kept the tour going city-after-city.

    John has also served as a strategist at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. and within Waggener Edstrom Worldwide’s (now WE Communications) social innovation practice, advising clients like Tiffany & Co., L’Oreal Paris, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Safeway, Women for Women International and CARE on social responsibility.

    A professor of storytelling, management, leadership and social impact at Georgetown University, John is also a highly sought after keynote speaker and master trainer who has worked with hundreds of executive groups at the World Bank, ConEdison, Smithsonian, United Way, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and many others. He has been interviewed about his research by NPRThe Washington PostThe Chronicle of PhilanthropyBloomberg News and dozens of other media outlets. John is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in organizational leadership from Concordia University Chicago.

     

  • Donna Z. Davis
    University of Oregon

    Donna Z. Davis joined the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication faculty in fall 2010, where she taught in Eugene for one year before heading to Portland to teach in the school’s Strategic Communication master’s program. She now serves as director of the program. She brings more than 25 years’ experience in public relations, fundraising, and nonprofit communication to the classroom, including 10 years as producer and host of Family Album Radio, an award-winning, daily, two-minute radio program distributed through NPR; leading corporate support efforts for the NPR and PBS affiliates at the University; and working with a number of state, national and international environmental organizations. She also was the first working mother to serve as State President of the Florida Public Relations Association.

    Davis earned her PhD in mass communication from the University of Florida, where she studied relationship formation in 3D immersive virtual environments. Her ethnographic research continues to focus on the potential uses of virtual reality, virtual worlds, gamification, and other emerging social media, with special interest in disability communities and advocacy. She is in her third year of a grant from the National Science Foundation to study both the potential positive and/or negative effects of embodiment on the creation of life experience, relationships, identity and community in social virtual reality (see www.ourditigalselves.org ). She and her co-PI, Tom Boellstorff from UC Irvine are also exploring how the evolution of emerging VR technologies are changing those experiences.

    She was also an inaugural faculty fellow for the SOJC Agora Journalism Center for Innovation and Civic Engagement, extending her work with people with Parkinson’s disease who participate in a support community in a virtual world. She also recently received Agora funding to study the role of presence and immersion in 360-degree video use on advocacy behaviors for an environmental organization.

    A self-proclaimed frank evangelist, Davis has been attending frank gatherings since the first year and is excited to be a co-host for frank scholar.

  • Andy Opel
    Florida State University

    Andy Opel is a Professor in the School of Communication at Florida State University where he teaches documentary video production and environmental communication.

    Andy received his B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Harvard University, his M.S. in Communication from the University of Oregon and his PhD in Mass Communication from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2001.

She is in her third year of a grant from the National Science Foundation to study both the potential positive and/or negative effects of embodiment on the creation of life experience, relationships, identity and community in social virtual reality (see www.ourditigalselves.org ). She and her co-PI, Tom Boellstorff from UC Irvine are also exploring how the evolution of emerging VR technologies are changing those experiences.

    She was also an inaugural faculty fellow for the SOJC Agora Journalism Center for Innovation and Civic Engagement, extending her work with people with Parkinson’s disease who participate in a support community in a virtual world. She also recently received Agora funding to study the role of presence and immersion in 360-degree video use on advocacy behaviors for an environmental organization.

    A self-proclaimed frank evangelist, Davis has been attending frank gatherings since the first year and is excited to be a co-host for frank scholar.

    Andy Opel is a Professor in the School of Communication at Florida State University where he teaches documentary video production and environmental communication.

    Andy received his B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Harvard University, his M.S. in Communication from the University of Oregon and his PhD in Mass Communication from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2001.
